A Green Corridor from the town to open spaces

Great weather for the 2012 Wassail (above)

Thanks to Prospects & the New Deal, Frome Millennium Green has had a huge spring clean!! Over the last two weeks a team of volunteers from Yeovil and Frome have been working very hard clearing and mulching footpaths, cutting back nettles and brambles and rebuilding stone walls. It’s made a huge difference and the Trustees of Frome Millennium Green Trust would like to say a very big  ‘thank you’ to the volunteers so expertly led by Ian, Humphrey and Rebecca from Goblincoombe Environment Centre in Bristol but also to Frome Town Council and Simon Woollen for putting it in place. Great work!

Frome Millennium Green has had two grants this year, 2011, one from the Frome Lottery (pic right) and one from Frome Town Council. These will help with obtaining tools and replacing benches.

Millennium Green Nature Notes

In the Spring 2002 Frome Millennium Green Trust engaged Enviromental Education Consultant, Raymond Wheeler to produce some Nature Notes for the Millennium Green that could be used by Frome Schools in line with the National Curriculum. This beautifully produced resource was funded thanks to a grant from Frome Town Council and each school was presented with a pack at the September meeting of Frome Headteacher’s.

The Nature Notes are still available by contacting info@fmgt.org.uk

Frome Millennium Green takes part in the Guinness World Tree Planting Record

In November 2000 Frome Millennium Green took part in the Guinness World Tree Planting Record as ran by the Tree Council. On a day of particularly inclement weather three hardy volunteers planted whips of Hawthorn, Blackthorn,Spindle, Hazel, Field Maple and Wild Service Tree. This planting of smaller Native British trees, compliments the already established woodland and provides more cover and nesting for birds in the North West corner of the Green. 107,781 trees were planted throughout the British Isles to achieve the Guinness World Record and 92 of that total were planted on the Millennium Green in Frome.

FROGS help out on Frome Millennium Green

On a glorious Spring afternoon FROGS (Frome Recreation and Open Ground Supporters) ran an activity and Nature Trail on Frome Millennium Green for children whilst adults helped do some general clearing and litter picking. Activities included clay faces on trees, nature bracelets and mirror walks. As Frome Millennium Green Trust is a charity FROGS support is crucial in keeping the Millennium Green open for people to enjoy. From Spring cleans to Autumn tidy up’s FROGS, along with Friends of the River Frome , help clear brambles and nettles to keep footpaths clear as well as picking up litter.
