Gathering Apples in the Millennium Green Orchard!
On a still September afternoon a happy band gathered the Tom Putt’s
and Oaken Pin Maiden’s from the Millennium Green Orchard. A scene
typical of orchards all over Somerset, with children up ladders and
ancient apple gathering implements getting those tricky to reach apples
from the very tops of trees. The Tom Putt’s (an very old Somerset
variety unusual for being both a culinary and cider apple) were
carefully wrapped in newspaper ready to be used at the Apple Day at St
John’s School on Sunday 16th October. Everyone was in agreement that the
Oaken Pin Maiden’s, a dessert apple from Devon (and unusually
cylindrical in shape) were not only the most beautiful apples but also
the most delicious to eat...and many were! The Tom Putt’s cropped
earlier than usual this year so the windfalls will be used for juicing
on Apple Day. Many thanks to all those who came!
Keep an eye on the website for announcements of further gathering days
for the Old Somerset Russet and Golden Knob varieties which are not yet
ready and remember * Apple Day @ St John’s School on Sunday 16th October from 1 – 4pm *
